Mark Twain and Nathaniel Hawthorne depicted two characters, Hester Prynne and Huckleberry Finn; as social outcasts in their societies. Hester Prynne is a women shunned by her puritan society for committing adultery. Huckleberry Finn isn’t accepted in his society for being uneducated, poor, homeless at times, and unreligious. Hester Prynne and Huckleberry Finn are subjected to being outcasts in their own societies because they didn’t abide to their rules and morals.
Hester Prynne was condemned to wear “on her breast of her gown, in fine red cloth,….the letter A”, that stands for adultery the sin she committed; she is forced to live that sin every day because of it. Hester’s puritan society and the town fathers, Governor Bellingham, Reverend Wilson, and Reverend Dimmesdale decided "She would become the general symbol at which the preacher and moralist might point, and in which they might vivify and embody their images of woman's frailty and sinful passion."
Hester was made to be the symbol of what one shouldn’t become in the Boston puritan society, she is looked down by everyone, children, and even strangers. The persecution of her society made her contemplate to “have death”, said she, “have
wished for it, would even have prayed for it, were it fit that such as I should pray for anything." She took all the persecution, and the oppression because of the “Scarlet Letter” “A” stitched on her chest, and in addition to the letter, she became a social outcast; the source of her misery, the letter, her child, and her outcast, was the sin she committed; the moral rule of her puritan society she broke.
Huckleberry Finn was a poor, uneducated boy, dealt with horrible cards. Huckleberry Finn’s mother is dead, and his father is nothing but a mere drunkard. Huckleberry Finn hated the fact that the Widow Douglas “ took [him] for her son, and allowed she would sivilize [him]”. Huckleberry Finn was also morally incompetent in with religion and its ways. He was not a bad person, he was confused and uneducated with his society’s ways; when Miss Watson “told [him] all about the bad place, and [he] said [he] wished [he] was there. She got mad, then, but [he] didn’t mean no harm. All [he] wanted was to go somewheres, all [he] wanted was a change."
After Miss Watson Told him what he said was “wicked” and “wouldn’t say it for the whole world; she was going to live so as to go to the good place”, Huckleberry Finn “couldn’t see no advantage….so [he] made up [his] mind [he] wouldn’t try for it. He was just uneducated in the morals of his society, his father started his moral confusion when he “said it warn't no harm to borrow things if you was meaning to pay them back some time", basically teaching him it’s just peachy to steal. In Huckleberry Finn’s society Jim was nothing but “Miss Watson’s [nigger]”, nothing but mere property. Huckleberry Finn thought of Jim as an equal and a friend, "It was fifteen minutes before [he]
could...humble [himself] to a nigger; but [he] warn't ever sorry for it afterward". Huckleberry Finn grew to love Jim as a dear friend, Huckleberry Finn broke his societies rule by helping Jim; he knew "People would call [him] a low down abolitionist and despise [him] for keeping mum but that don't make no difference [he] aint gonna tell". Huckleberry Finn realized he did nothing by helping Jim out, Jim showed Huckleberry Finn kindness and would help him out; he would be "standing [Finn’s] watch on top of his'n, stead of calling [him] so [he] could go on sleeping". Reminiscing and realizing all of this, Huckleberry Finn ripped his confession letter to Miss Watson and said "all right then, I'll go to hell".
Huckleberry Finn and Hester Prynne were considered outcasts by their own societies because they followed their own moral laws , and consequently breaking the social order. Huckleberry Finn in the end decided to live life his own way, wanting to “light out the territory ahead of the rest” instead of being adopted by Aunt sally; since he’s “been there before” and he “can’t stand it”. Hester Prynne decided to break a puritan law, adultery; and from then on was with out a doubt destined to be persecuted, oppressed, an outcast in her society. Hester Prynne and Huckleberry Finn decided to make their own decisions, as a result breaking the social order of their societies, and thus becoming outcast in their societies.
itll probably look shitty since i copied n pasted it from my microzoft workz
