ive been wanting to write this guide for a while but i get bored and start doing other things, or actually like i was writing it the last time and i had to go somwhere and i forgot to save it so i have to start over, so this better help some of you ppl or im going to be pissed . lol jk, but hope it helps!
Ever turn on your computer and go watch full episode of your show comeback and your computer is still turning on? Or your about to leave the house and you want to check your email since you say its only going to take five minutes, and after five minutes your computer is still turning on and loading your desktop, so five minutes pass and you cant even turn off your computer properly since your start menu has not loaded yet? Well one reason this happens is because of Start up Programs! What is a start up program? a virus? no! Spyware? no! Programs that start up automatically with your computer and are suppose to make your task easier to do? YES! These program which you dont use or only sometimes use, or maybe even never use are using up your RAM and CPU! Yes they are here is a little sample of some programs that you may have set as your start ups and that use a lot of cpu!
The red ones are the ones that ppl have to start automatically with their computer. Notice how i set the list to go by the one that uses the most memory to the one that uses the least? Which means the ones on top use a lot of memory and the ones on bottom use least. So notice how Limewire is on top? Well it is one of the start ups that a lot of ppl that use the program limewire have! Myspace IM, another program that ppl have set to run automatically, and sure sometimes you do use it and sometimes you dont! Yahoo messenger! another one, a lot of ppl have it to open up automatically so they can message their friends but a lot of ppl that have it automatically dont use it, or they log in and none of their friends (or friends that they want to talk to at the moment) are on at that time so they just minimize it(and yes if you press the red X on yahoo messenger, or just about any messenger(Myspace im) it only minimizes not closes, which means it is still running and useing up your memory. ALSO many people who have NORTON ANTIVIRUS, Mcafee, or any other pay for anti virus dotn know that their anti viruses are not that good, but also they dont know that they are one of the programs that use up the most memory! Look at my antivirus AVG, its almost at the very bottom of the list, and it is on the top of the best antivirus out their, and best of all its free. So people stop and think.
Do you want
A. to pay around $30-$60 for an anti virus that is not that good at doing its job, and slows down your computer!
or
B.Get a Free Antivirus, that is one of the best their is, and uses little memory so it barely slows down your computer yet it keeps it safe?
I went with B as you can see and my computer is clean!
Ok so now your thinking ok i do use all of those programs most of the time, so im going to leave them to start up automatically. That is sort of smart thinking but when your computer is starting up, it has to load your OS, Desktop, everythign that your computer needs to run so it uses up a lot of memory, now if you add programs like the ones listed above, it is going to use so much memory that it will freeze and unfreeze, freeze and unfreeze, while you wait to use your program that you love so much.
What if i told you, you can avoid this? How about you remove all those programs off your start up list? Ok, your thinking whats dat going to do im still going to start them up after my computer loads. And that is exactly what you should do. Why? because
Reason #1, your computer will start up much faster, which means you can open up the program you need at that time, weather it be limewire,YIM wat ever. You get to pick which opens up first, so it will open up much much faster and you can use it as soon as it opens up. The reason this is faster is because you dont tell your computer to open up a lot of programs at the same time, you tell it to just turn on run what it has to run and once it does and is not running other memory wasting applications, then you tell it to open of say limewire, so it puts its focus on just limewire and opens it faster instead of having to open up a lot of different programs at once!
So sounds like a good deal right? now i will show you how to make your programs not start up with your computer.
Their are a couple of ways, some are quick but the quick ones sometimes do not remove all the start up programs you want to remove, so if one way does not work move on to the next ways, and as we move on things get a little more complicated in a way.
Here we go! by the way im useing Windows Vista Home premium, so the screen shots will be of vista, but these tips work on other versions of windows, just might be a little different
First and simple way, click on your Start menu>All Programs>Startup and right click and delete the start up programs you dont want, and remember these are just Shortcuts that tell your computer to start up, they are not the program itself so its ok to remove without harming the program itself. vvv Ignore the cute pussy!
Or go to Computer(my computer for xp users)>C:>Microsoft>Windows>Start menu>programs>startup
maybe different for xp and delete the programs that you dont want to start up with your computer from that folder.
Another way to do it, which is more difficult because if you delete a program that your computer needs to start up, then your computer might not work properly. I Suggest you set a System restore point, just in case you mess up.
As you noticed not every program that start up with your computer is listed in the Start>All programs>Startup. So this is why you have this step. Choose Start>Run> and type MSCONFIG(or Vista users can do Start and on the start search type in the command MSCONFIG) and press Enter. System Configuration Utility should come up! Now click on the Startup Tab. like this
here you will see all your start ups, even the good ones, so just uncheck the ones you dont watn to start up automatically and click on Ok. Sof ok a little hint is to stretch out the command column and some of the programs that have weird names will give you hints at what they really are. like if you dont know what "qttask" is and you stretch out the command column you will notice that is says something about quicktime player, which means you dont need it to start up automatically. Another tip would be if you dont know what it is then leave it checked to avoid problems.
Vista users
Start>Control Panel> right below programs, it should say "Change start up programs" click on that ,once your their ir may not let you remove any programs, so click on where it says "Show for all users" then it will let you remove programs from starting up. by selecting a program and clicking Remove!
